About Us & Culture

Hi! My name is Erin and I started Hair of the Dog in 2018 as a side hustle. Since that time, the business has grown to include an online shop and 19 stockists (now in 2 countries!)

In addition to the values below, my commitment to you is that my products will always be made in Canada using high quality fabrics, so they're made to last.

Community

We love to promote and support other small businesses whenever we can! Through collaborations with businesses like Dye Tryin and Upcycle Collective, to spending our money locally, to creating resources for our customers to discover and support other small business, we're borderline obsessed.

Supporting small businesses means supporting the people that run them, their families, and investing in your community.

Territory Acknowledgement

Hair of the Dog and its employees live and work on the traditional and unceded Lekwungen and WSÁNEĆ territories of the Coast Salish Nation. Territory acknowledgement is only the minimum we can do as settlers on this land, and we're committed to supporting indigenous communities through fundraising events and using our small but mighty social media following to promote indigenous-owned small business.

Diversity and Representation in the Fashion Industry

Vancouver Island has been such a supportive and encouraging environment in which to start a small business. We're committed to hiring models that represent all of the beautiful people in Victoria, and acknowledge that historically the beauty and fashion industries have not held this same commitment.

Providing Living Wages

Companies aren't made up of things or financials, they're made up of people. We're committed to treating our people with respect, encouraging them to succeed in their personal lives, and compensating them fairly. Hair of the Dog employees work from their homes or from our studio with flexible schedules, and are compensated at or above the living (not minimum) wage for Vancouver Island.

Minimizing Waste

Due to their design, scrunchies make very little waste! I'll be honest, this wasn't by design, but is a great bonus. Often, after a big batch of orders, the only waste will be a few threads, which is unavoidable when sewing. When there are scraps left over, they are saved and used for patchwork items and personal projects.

These are just some of our values - don't see something listed here that you're curious about? Please don't hesitate to email us!
